BACK TO THE MOON — AND BEYOND
PROFESSOR RICHARD B. HOOVER,
APRIL 20, 2020 — 7:00 P.M.

Friends, we invite you to a unique lecture by a Professor of Astrobiology Richard B. Hoover on April 20 at 19:00 in a large lecture hall Cultural Center ZIL.

ATTENTION! Admission is strictly by registration.

The lecture will be delivered in English with translation.

Prof. Richard B. Hoover, United States Space and Rocket Center NASA Emeritus/Marshall Space Flight Center Huntsville, Alabama, USA & Visiting Research Professor, Buckingham Astrobiology Centre, University of Buckingham, UK .

The lecture will be devoted to the history of the study of the Moon and the return to the South Pole of the Moon by astronauts during manned lunar missions planned to be carried out in the near future.

Half a century ago, Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong and pilot of the lunar module «Eagle» Buzz Aldrin, became the first humans to set foot on the moon. The Saturn V rocket that delivered these Astronauts to the Sea of Tranquility near the lunar equator was the result of the development of liquid

fuel rockets, pioneered by rocket scientists in several countries: Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky and Sergey Pavlovich Korolev (Russia), Robert Esnault-Pelterie (France), Hermann Oberth and Werner von Braun (Germany) and Robert H. Goddard (United States). Human exploration of the Moon ceased on December 19, 1972 when Commander Eugene Cernan and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt lifted off from Taurus-Littrow Valley.

Forty years after these legendary missions, the Moon again attracted researchers’ attention in 2009 the NASA LCROSS spacecraft discovered evidence for water ice in Cabeus crater near the lunar south pole. On March 26, 2019, during a meeting of the National Space Council at the United States Space and Rocket Center (USSRC), Vice President Mike Pence announced the US intention to return astronauts to the South Pole of the Moon within five years. The existence of nearly-pure water ice in these permanently shadowed polar craters is a profound reason why we must return to the Moon. This precious and abundant vital natural resource can provide water, oxygen and hydroponic food needed to sustain human life and to produce liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen rocket fuel for missions launched from the 1/6 g and atmosphere-free surface of the Moon to Mars and beyond.

Ancient water ice frozen in the dark polar craters could also contain the cryopreserved living or remains of microbial extremophiles that may have been carried by comets to the Moon from outer planets or icy moons of our Solar System. The detection of extraterrestrial life forms in the ice at the south pole of the Moon will show that life is a Cosmic Imperative rather than limited to planet Earth. This discovery will give the final answer to one of the greatest questions Are we alone ?

Forty eight years have passed since the last astronaut visited the Moon. From the lecture you will learn about the history of rocket development, the discovery of water on the Moon and plans for return. Science brings nations together. In the spirit of competition and cooperation, perhaps this exciting research will make way for another «giant leap for mankind».

Our lecture will be broadcast live on the channel Moscow Astronomy Club on YouTube.
